Website Instruction

The launch of our new website in 2020 required many changes to how NHIMA members login to the member area, renew memberships, and register for our informational classes and camps. Our Treasurer, Nina Andersen developed instructional videos to assist our membership.

As we continue to navigate this pandemic, many are turning to virtual practice and performance spaces.  Simon Powis, classical guitarist put together a video "Teaching Music Online with Zoom" that shows the tools that can be utilized through Zoom.

Dan Kapp, Vice President of NHIMA had some extra time on his hands (who doesn’t?) and prepared this very entertaining clip - just for NHIMA - about the Trumpet Family. Please, watch Prof. Von Kapp and Dan.

Mandi Schlegel, Assistant Professor of Instrumental Music Education, Director, Congaree New Horizons Band Program, SC is teaching her band despite the COVID-19 pandemic. She has combined the technology of Zoom and SmartMusic software to allow her band members to get together and practice in a really fun way. She has developed an intro video (see link below) to provide interested players/band directors to learn a bit more about this before joining an actual session.

Recorded Fall 2020 the PMAC/Portsmouth New Horizons Band performing the Grand Canyon Suite by Ferde Grofe, arranged by Douglas E. Wagner. Directed by Russ Grazier.

Steven Smith produced two videos to share.  The first is a trumpet cover of An American in Havana.  The second is Little Brown Jug Trumpet Boards Youth Group Remote Performance.

Andy Chelchowski, one of the conductors at the Western University NHB in London, Canada asked members to send ‘Quarantine Messages.’ He sent NHB members this video link at the same time that our usual practices would happen on Saturday morning. As Andy said: “For Now We Need to be Haydn….but we’ll be Bach!”

The Portsmouth New Hampshire New Horizons Band didn't let the pandemic get in the way of their weekly rehearsals. The band shifted quickly to remote rehearsals using Zoom and SmartMusic technology. The band decided that Brighton Beach, a concert march they were rehearsing, would be the perfect piece for this project. Each musician in the ensemble created a video of their part from home using SmartMusic and a smartphone. They then emailed each video to their band director, Russ Grazier, who assembled all of the videos into a single performance of the piece.

The Western University NHB held a COVID concert on a large parking lot in September 2020, complying with the local public health regulations. The band practiced on-line four times prior to the concert. Conductors Mark Enns and Mary Gillard volunteered their time to allow for band members to give this once in a lifetime concert.

Diane Muffitt of Sudbury Valley New Horizons Music (band and strings) in Sudbury, MA have recently completed their first Virtual Performance piece!  They have had quite a musical journey from mid-March 2020 to this point. When all playing together stopped, they moved to learning about other aspects of music on-line; it was useful as these are topics that usually don’t get covered during the year while prepping for concerts. They had seminars aimed at beginners - advanced players, with choices of 4 or 5 topics on any given evening. Among other things, they had seminars on music theory basics, practicing for performance, using the Acapella app, rhythm work, some advanced sessions on 12-tone music, analysis of a Bach Cello Suite and baroque ornamentation. They also did what we call "Listening Inside the Music" to awaken the ears, exploring classical, jazz, pop/rock and some rather odd combinations of instruments.  Andante from Mozart's Notturno, K. 286, originally for 4 orchestras (strings and horns), here arranged for Sudbury Valley New Horizons Music’s strings, woodwinds, brass and percussion.  Diane commented: “This was fun! On to the next virtual performances!!”

Cindy Miller-Aungst is the past president of the Ringgold Band and Assistant conductor of Ringgold New Horizons Band. She sent this brilliant idea how members of the band are staying connected during the pandemic. Although they are not doing virtual performances they are creating a video series entitled ‘Ringgold Rapid Responses’ which are short interviews with members from the Ringgold Band (the NH sponsoring band) and Ringgold New Horizons Band.

Nina Andersen, director of The New Horizons Band of Greater Portland, Maine sent in this great video performance. The Band barely "missed a beat" when they had to stop meeting in person in mid-March.  The group quickly moved to virtual weekly sessions using Zoom and structured their sessions to include playing along with repertoire they had been working on using Smart Music and recordings played using the Amazing Slow Downer app; breakout sessions with specialist faculty; and a focused session on one of the elements of music making - such as breathing, phrasing, dynamics, articulation and different styles of music.  Normally the group ends their session with a final concert.  Because we couldn't do that this year we decided to create a music video.  Everyone created both an audio and video recording of their part and Director, Nina Andersen edited and compiled the video.  Folks had lots of fun with the video portion, donning appropriate western/cowboy/girl attire to go along with the music - The Magnificent Seven - film score by Elmer Bernstein, arr. by Michael Story.

Paul Bruesch from Greensboro, NC send in this great idea. Paul and his friend Ann from New Bern, NC have each collaborated with other musicians using the Acapella app (by PickPlayPost) for iPhone and iPad. Here is the YouTube link to a piece that Paul recorded in collaboration with his friend Ann Clarke Courtney using the Acapella app. This piece is titled Little Red Monkey by Jack Jordan, arranged by Russell Nygren.

Susan Baskin, director of New Horizons Music North York, Ontario, Canada sent in the video of the Virtual Performance of their music group as their closing 'concert' on June 15. The group never stopped during Covid. They switched to a virtual platform immediately with the theme: 'And The Beat Goes On'. It was a wonderful project that included members from their concert band, intensive band class, ukulele group, and a handful of high school and college students (former students of Susan’s). They performed the uplifting piece 'Tomorrow' from the Broadway Musical Annie.

Covid 19 Blues, Featuring how to play a trumpet with a mask on.  David Coulson, trumpet player in Paulette Gulakowki’s New Horizons Band of Greater Pittsburgh, wrote and performed his own Covid 19 Blues - it is hilarious and also shows how you CAN play your instrument with a mask on.
