 Circus Bands-Jump on the Bandwagon

Have you ever been to a circus?  Have you really listened to the music or is it just background?  Can you imagine the clowns or the trapeze artists without musical accompaniment?  It would be like a movie with no soundtrack.  OK, but dull…

Come learn some secrets about the "Windjammers" and their “Screamers"!  (Answering questions like:  How are the horses trained to canter in time with the music?  What are some of the superstitions that persist among the musicians?  Why is Sousa’s Stars and Stripes Forever never part of the programming, even though it is such a great march?)  We will visit much of the historic music, but also sit right next to the drummer of the modern-day Ringling Brothers Barnum and Bailey (RBB&B) and see the band from the inside!

Join Diane Muffitt, Director of the Sudbury Valley New Horizons Music, Inc. for an evening of fun. Diane Muffitt is retired from a career of thirty-eight years teaching middle school bands, starting in Eliot/South Berwick, Maine, and from 1980-2012, in Wayland, Massachusetts.  A few years back, she started Sudbury Valley New Horizons Band.  SVNH Music is thriving with 80-90 members in the band and a string ensemble.  While teaching, she was active in the Massachusetts Music Educators' Association, serving as District Chairperson, as a member of the Mass Music Educators' Conference Committee, as a conference clinician, and as Junior District Festival chairperson. Diane has also conducted Junior District Bands several times for other districts in the state. In addition, she has been a clinician for pre-service and in-service music educators. Diane was for many years conductor of Boston's Freedom Trail Band. In 2012, she was appointed Program Director to create a new band camp for adults, New England Adult Music Camp, in Sidney, Maine. After four years as Program Director, she successfully “retired from retirement,” turning the administration over to a new program director. She is now happily teaching at camp as Director of Beginner and Novice Studies, rather than running the camp.
