Jean Hein will give you a glimpse into her musical journey that recently included an invitation to begin teaching recorder classes for the New Horizons program at the University of South Carolina in Columbia, SC. She will present a brief history of the recorder and introduce the various sizes of recorders with musical demonstrations and performance examples. Hein will make suggestions about starting recorder classes in your New Horizons program, and will conclude with thoughts on the benefits of adding early music to your life through playing the recorder and how you might discover your Most Pleasant Companion.

Jean Hein, arts administrator, baroque recorder player, and clarinetist, is a founding member, recorder soloist, and director of Columbia Baroque. Hein serves on the Board of Directors of Early Music America. She teaches recorder classes for the Congaree New Horizons Band program at the University of South Carolina. Hein previously served as executive director of the Sandlapper Singers in South Carolina, Arts @ St. Luke’s in Oklahoma, and the Fox Valley Children’s Choir in Illinois. She has toured Ireland and Wales performing Baroque and Celtic music and participated in chamber music concerts in the Midwest, Southwest, and Southeastern US. As a clarinetist, Hein maintains a large clarinet studio in Columbia, SC. She has performed as a clarinetist in orchestras and chamber ensembles in the Midwest and Southeast. Hein has served on the faculty of Claflin University, Cornell College, Coe College, and Columbia College. She holds music degrees from the Oberlin Conservatory and Northwestern University, with further study at the University of Iowa and summer study at the Oberlin Baroque Performance Institute.
